From Ship Manoeuvering to Robotic Fish: BMT Records Highest Ever Profit and Turnover to Celebrate 25th Anniversary

18-May-2010

BMT Group Ltd, the international design, engineering and risk management consultancy announced today that it has achieved a record turnover of £142m and boosted profits by 55% to £12m in the year to 30 September 2009. Of this profit, £5.3m has been distributed to the staff through the company's profit share schemes. The company, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, experienced particularly strong growth in the Americas and Asia Pacific.

The 23 companies that comprise the BMT group have successfully reinforced the organisation's maritime offering in its three core sectors of defence, energy & environment and transport. Highlights included: the renewal of the UK MoD's Submarine Support Management Group (SSMG) contract to provide engineering support to the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine flotilla; successful completion of an environmental impact and marine navigation safety risk assessment for Hong Kong's first offshore wind farm; and the continued deployment of BMT's innovative real-time performance monitoring and trend analysis tool SMARTPOWER working with a growing number of major tanker and LNG fleet operators.

Peter French, Chief Executive of BMT Group Ltd said: "Our resilience is due, in part, to the non commoditised nature of our work in which our specialist knowledge has continued to demonstrate its value even in difficult markets. We have also benefitted from the diversification that we have been careful to build over the last few years. However, we would not have been able to achieve these results if not for our people. They have worked tirelessly to deliver exceptional projects for clients all around the world.

BMT's 25th anniversary has also seen its sustainability strategy come to fruition. The company's comprehensive approach to corporate sustainability goes beyond just environmental management. It also conducts advanced scenario planning for clients on the impact of global issues such as water shortage and energy security, providing advice on the positive steps that can be taken to address these. Next year's ambitious targets for the group include the diversion of over 70% of all its office waste into recycling and a 20% reduction of greenhouse gases stemming from its office operations and travel.

Since its formation in 1985, some of the group's most notable achievements include: the adoption of BMT's design for the new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier for the UK MoD; the development of ground breaking oil spill ocean surveillance services which use radar imaging to identify and trace oil spills; and the utilisation of BMT's ship manoeuvring simulator ‘PC Rembrandt' onboard Cunard's Queen Mary 2, then the world's largest liner. 25 years of continuous R&D and cutting edge innovation have enriched BMT's consultancy capability. Its expertise ranges from electric ship technology, to robotic fish for pollution monitoring, from sophisticated subsea instrumentation to software for flood modelling.
